New Zealand Young Farmers and NZ Transport Agency Unite for "Great Mate" Initiative

In a significant step towards enhancing road safety and promoting responsible drinking habits, New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF) has partnered with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to launch the "Great Mate" initiative. This initiative encourages young farmers and young people within the food and fibre sector to make safe choices regarding alcohol consumption and driving, ensuring they have reliable options to get home safely.

Rural areas often face unique challenges related to road safety. With longer distances, limited public transportation, and a strong social culture, the risks associated with drink-driving are heightened. The "Great Mate" initiative aims to tackle these challenges by providing young farmers with the knowledge and resources they need to make the safest choice. The initiative reminds young farmers of the dangers of drink driving, encourages them to plan ahead, and celebrates those who are taking responsibility for getting their friends home safely.

Recognising the limited transportation options in rural areas, the initiative promotes practical and proactive alternatives for getting home safely, such as encouraging designated drivers, staying overnight and organising club-based carpool systems. NZYF clubs across the country are actively involved in implementing and spreading the initiative's message, leveraging the provided tools to reach a wide audience and fostering a community-driven approach to road safety.

Since its recent inception, the "Great Mate" initiative has seen enthusiastic participation from NZYF clubs nationwide. Numerous clubs have actively encouraged their members to prioritize having a “Great Mate” to ensure they get home safely. This initiative not only emphasizes the importance of responsible drinking but also celebrates those who take on the responsibility of getting their friends home safe.

“At New Zealand Young Farmers, we believe that looking out for each other is at the heart of our community. Through the ‘Great Mate’ initiative, we are committed to fostering a culture of responsibility and care on the road, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their time together and get home safely,” said Lynda Coopersmith, CEO NZYF.

As the initiative continues to grow, it is poised to become a cornerstone of road safety initiatives within rural New Zealand. The dedication of NZYF clubs to embracing and promoting the "Great Mate" message is a testament to the initiative’s potential to save lives.
