Meet the Regional Finalists

Stephen Brunskill

Bachelor of Management Studies graduate, now working in BNZ Agri and based in Morrinsville. Living on a 180ha dry stock farm with my wife, Hayley, I enjoy swapping the office for the outdoors—whether it's fencing, spraying, or stock work. Outside of farming, you'll find me mountain biking the Te Miro trails or quietly tracking the local fellow deer.

Hayley Brunskill

From a diploma in veterinary nursing to working as an AB technician, and now farming alongside my husband, Stephen, on our 180ha dry stock farm. When I’m not on the farm, you’ll find me in the garden, out for a ride on my horse, or enjoying a good day hike.

Lucy Stratton

Mixed animal veterinarian based in Waikato. In my spare time, I enjoy running and spending time out on the farm.

Danielle Brown

I'm in my first season of dairy farming, and absolutely loving it! I studied a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Massey University. In my spare time I love getting outdoors and running, tramping, hunting etc. I also really enjoy training my dog.

Hugh Jackson

Sheep and beef farming on the family farm in Te Akau. Primary running bull finishing operation but also have a ewe flock and finish all the lambs. Currently Chair of the Hamilton City Young Farmers club and a volunteer fire fighter. In my spare time I enjoy getting out for a fish, dive or a bit of pest control.

Will Evans

Bachelor of Agricultural Science graduate from Massey University, now working as the Operations Manager at Alexander Farming Genetics.

Laura Davis

Grew up on a farm in Piopio, King Country, fostering a deep passion for agriculture from an early age. Studied a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Massey University before starting my career as a Farm Technician at Goudies Station in Reporoa. Progressed to Stock Manager on Sexton at Taupo, then transitioned into agribusiness as a Territory Sales Manager at Agricom. Now working with Beef + Lamb NZ as an Extension Manager, helping support and grow the sector. Based in Hamilton, with a long-term goal of owning land outside the city while continuing to contribute to the agricultural industry.

Luke Farrell

I’m currently managing the family dairy farm in Tirau, bringing a hands-on approach to daily operations and herd management. Before stepping into this role, I spent three years at Lincoln University, earning a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture. Outside of farming, I enjoy playing sports and spending time with friends and family.

We're trying something new!

The FMG Young Farmer of the Year Contest is a long season normally and it can put a lot of pressure on our member volunteers to deliver.

We’re trialling a new format in the Northern and Waikato Bay of Plenty regions to look at ways that we can still find New Zealand’s best Young Farmer, but in a way that is potentially more streamlined.

The Format

These will be two-day events, with day one resembling the traditional District Contest and day two aligning more closely with a Regional Final.

Day 1

30 Contestants
10-15, 15-minute modules
Similar format to District Contests
The top 8 Contestants move to Day 2

Day 2

Top 8 Contestants from Day 1
2 x Head-to-Heads, 1 x Farmlet
Quiz at Evening Show
Winner moves to Grand Final

Evening Show

There'll still be an Evening Show, where our top eight will battle it out one final time for a spot at the Grand Final.
