Meet the Regional Finalists

Winners in the East Coast FMG Young Farmer of the Year take home a share of $17,000 worth of prizes, including an Honda XR150 Farm Bike, cash thanks to FMG, Prize Packs, Bushbuck gear, Milwaukee and Woolworths' Vouchers and more!

Connor Richardson

I’m currently working as a shepherd in my first full-time farm role just outside of Dannevirke. I recently completed a two-year Diploma in Agriculture at Telford in Balclutha, where I was awarded the Top Sheep Practical Award in my first year and recognised as the Top Overall Academic Diploma Student in my second.

Outside of work, I’m an active member of my community, playing soccer and tennis for local clubs and volunteering with the local fire brigade. I also enjoy hunting and camping in my free time.

James Robbie

I’m a fifth-generation sheep and beef farmer on Otapawa Station, our family property. While I grew up around farming, it took stepping away to study Political Science and International Relations in Wellington and a successful stint in the corporate world for me to truly appreciate life on the land. Since returning to agriculture, I’ve immersed myself in all aspects of sheep and beef farming, particularly our Poll Hereford stud, which has given me incredible opportunities to connect with the international beef industry in Australia, the United States, and Mexico.

Beyond farming, I use my background to bridge the gap between government organisations and local communities through a charity initiative, helping to address the challenges posed by carbon farming in our region. I’m also the Future Beef NZ Senior Ambassador, Royal Agricultural Society Eastern Districts Ambassador, a volunteer rural firefighter, and Chairman of the Puketoi Young Farmers Club. Passionate about rural communities, I’m proud to give back wherever I can.

Samantha Thomson

Lease block owner with a lifestyle shearing run, working full-time on Four Kings crutching trailers. Currently working towards establishing a Suffolk stud.

Sam Sherwood

I work as a general hand on my father's farm, following five years as a shepherd across the North Island. I’m passionate about the outdoors and enjoy hunting and fishing in my free time.

Alice Anderson

I’m a Team Leader in the Catchment Management section at Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. In my spare time, I enjoy helping out on the farm and managing my own Dorset Down sheep stud. I love being outdoors, spending time with friends, and playing a bit of netball.

Emma Haughey

I’m 21 and in my second year of shepherding. I spent two years studying at Telford in South Otago, earning a Massey Diploma in Agriculture, along with a certificate in equine. In my spare time, I love exploring the incredible landscapes of New Zealand, capturing moments through photography, and getting out for a ride whenever I have the chance.

AgriKids & FMG Junior

Meet our Convenor

Emma Lewin

Dannevirke Young Farmers

Emma has been an NZYF member for around 11 years and has been a part of a number of clubs around the country.  Emma has been block managing and farm managing in central Hawke's Bay for the last four years. She's about to move to a new stock managing job in the Taranaki Manawatu Region and is also going to be starting a degree in Agri-Business through Massey University (via distance).

Emma says the East Coast Regional Final will challenge all the competitors and hopefully produce an East Coast member that will win a Grand Final. She's looking forward to the Agri-Sports - it'll be the highlight of the day!
