NZ Young Farmers is excited to announce the appointment of Cheyne Gillooly as its new Chief Executive Officer, starting Monday, 16 June 2025. Cheyne brings extensive experience in the government and primary sectors, coming from the Director Operations, Agriculture and Investment Services at Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

His background spans investment, business development, and policy leadership, complemented by a deep passion for rural communities and a strong track record in youth engagement.

Board Chair Chloe Jones says “as a grassroots membership organization, with a longstanding legacy contest and an educationally strategic dairy farm – the CEO role of NZ Young Farmers involves agility in a unique range of topics on any given day, and a diverse skillset to match this. Like any Not For Profit organization, we have challenges ahead, however with challenges come opportunity. Cheyne brings a wealth of experience with him – in stakeholder relations, strategic management and financial expertise. These will position him well to lead the next phase of NZ Young Farmers towards it’s vision.

Cheyne’s work at MPI has seen him closely involved in key initiatives to support regional development, drive innovation, and build stronger links between government and the agri-sector. He is well-respected for his ability to bridge policy with practical outcomes for rural New Zealand.

Speaking on his appointment, Cheyne says he’s excited to step into the role and work with an organization that plays such an important part in shaping the future of New Zealand agriculture.

"I am excited to join an organization with a proud legacy and an important role to play in the future of the sector. I look forward to working alongside the team, the board, members and stakeholders to lead the NZYF into the future it deserves"

Cheyne will be at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, developing relationships through connecting with stakeholders and sponsors, and visiting clubs and events across the country as part of his early engagement in the role. The NZ Young Farmers Board thanks outgoing CEO Lynda Coppersmith for her service in the organization and look forward to progressing on the solid foundation that has been built.

The NZ Young Farmers Board and wider team look forward to welcoming Cheyne to the organization in June and working together to support the next generation of food and fibre professionals.
