August 2025
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Tony Munford from the Bay of Islands Young Farmers Club. Tony has played a huge role in keeping the club alive and thriving, and his dedication has earned him our John Bull Member of the Month recognition.
At the start of 2024, the Bay of Islands Young Farmers Club was on the brink of closure, with Tony as the sole remaining member. But through determination and a whole lot of heart, Tony managed to rebuild the club, growing it to 15 paid members and counting. His energy, fresh ideas, and commitment to the club and wider community have made a real difference.
Meet Tony
How long have you been a member?
I joined the Bay of Islands Young Farmers Club two years ago.
What’s been the highlight of being part of Young Farmers?
For me, the highlight has been growing the club from a 2-man team to a strong group of 16 members in just two years. It’s been heaps of fun with the team all round. I’ve also gained valuable connections, learned about competitions, and developed a better understanding of stock judging.
How did you get involved in agriculture?
Through my father Shane, who I’ve helped in dairy sheds and beef farms growing up, and with his Southdown stud rams which he has been breeding for the last 5-6 years.
Career and Studies
Right now, Tony is studying Environmental Management (Level 6) at NorthTec in Whangārei. Alongside his studies, he works part-time at GSL Surveys Whangārei as an assistant and field worker. This mix of environmental science and hands-on fieldwork is setting him up with a unique skillset for the future.
Looking Ahead
When asked about the future of farming, Tony believes that agricultural equipment and safety technology will advance significantly, but he hopes the basics of farming will stay much the same.
As for his own journey, Tony has two pathways in mind:
-
Working in the environmental sector, particularly with native species or marine ecosystems.
-
Returning to the farming industry, perhaps taking over his father’s Southdown stud breeding or working in beef farming.
Inspirations
Tony credits his grandfather and father as his biggest inspirations in agriculture. They taught him what it takes to work with stock and how to judge meat breeds for cattle and sheep — skills and values that continue to guide him today.
Final Thoughts
From saving his club to building a bright future in both environmental management and farming, Tony truly embodies the spirit of Young Farmers. His leadership and commitment remind us that it only takes one person’s passion to bring a community together.
Congratulations Tony — and thank you for everything you’re doing for the Bay of Islands Young Farmers!
