Bark Ups have been part of New Zealand’s rural culture for over a century, and it’s fantastic to see NZ Young Farmers clubs across the country keeping this tradition alive and well.

Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Darfield Young Farmers Club Bark Up, held at Thirsty Acres in Kirwee. The week had been damp and unsettled, but just as competitors and spectators began arriving, the skies cleared, setting the stage for an afternoon of fun, entertainment, and community spirit.

Over 40 competitors lined up across a variety of categories: huntaway (dog and bitch), anything but a huntaway, and even human barking. From seasoned shepherds to kids giving it a go for the first time, the talent and enthusiasm on display was inspiring.

One of the highlights of the day was the creative entry from Hazel and her dog Marshmallow—Hazel strummed the ukulele while Marshmallow barked along, winning plenty of laughs and cheers from the crowd.

The event was brilliantly mc'd by Craig “Wiggy” Wiggins from Lean on a Gate, who kept the crowd entertained with his humour, commentary, and knack for getting everyone involved.

Events like this don’t just happen on their own, and the Darfield Young Farmers executive team—Bobby, Sarah, Jasmine, Alex, Adam, Kallum, and Evan—deserve huge recognition. From organising competitors and sponsors, to running raffles and auctions, their hard work ensured the day was a resounding success.

A live auction was held to raise valuable funds for the club, followed by live music that kept the energy going well into the night. It was clear the Bark Up wasn’t just a competition, but a celebration of community spirit and rural tradition.

 

It takes a lot of courage to get up on stage in front of a big crowd and give it your best bark, but every competitor threw themselves into it. Whether it was a serious attempt or a lighthearted one, the atmosphere was full of encouragement and laughter.

A big congratulations goes out to all of the winners, and an equally big thank you to the many local sponsors who donated prizes. Thanks also to everyone who bought raffle tickets or bid in the auction—every contribution helps the club thrive.

Darfield Young Farmers is always on the lookout for new members, and as this event showed, they have plenty to offer. From fun competitions to lifelong friendships, there’s something for everyone.
