Two-time Young Farmer of the Year Grand Finalist, Gareth McKerchar is now Business Development Executive at Halter in South Canterbury. We caught up with him for a rapid fire Q&A.

Tell us about yourself!

I grew up immersed in farming and helped my parents out every day on our family farm near Fairlie. Getting involved with NZYF came about pretty naturally - it was a place to compete, learn, and stay connected to the sector. After my studies at Lincoln, I worked on farms across NZ and Australia, then spent four years at Ravensdown before joining Halter.

Why Halter?
I was just blown away by the technology. Halter wasn't just changing how farmers manage their operations, it was changing how they felt about farming - hard not to get excited by that!

What's the best bit about working here?
The people. Everyone's super talented, hardworking and dedicated to building something genuinely life-changing for farmers.

What's life like outside of work?
Wife and I are expecting our second in September, and I'm also training for the Coast to Coast - busy times! Other than that, if there’s a river and a jet boat nearby, that’s where I’ll be.
