Hamilton was the centre of excitement as it hosted the NZYF Tournament: Goldpine National Final at the Claudelands Oval. A sunlit July day provided the perfect backdrop for seven teams of two from across the country to showcase their fencing skills, including two TeenAg members: Lachie O'Connell and Tom Batty, students at Geraldine High School.

Competitors were given just two hours to construct a 25m long five-wire electric fence. Each fence needed two strainer assemblies, intermediate posts and a metal gate - hung and latched at the stay end. A considerable challenge - worthy of a National Final - requiring teamwork, speed and precision.

Supported by Sarah Foley-Smith, Head of Department at the Primary Industry Academy and Agriculture teacher at Geraldine High School, Lachie and Tom were thrilled to represent their region at the competition. The pair focused on quality and time management to limit any point deductions.

"It's a big thing coming up to have a go at fencing in these competitions. After a two-hour competition, seeing your work after you've finished is really good. All the top-notch fencers in New Zealand are trying to help and teach us the best ways to do it, so it's handy. It's good to see your accomplishments and see how you can improve," Lachie said.

Tom added, "Especially the speed because you've got to work a lot faster under high-pressure environments. What I like about fencing is that it's all different, and it's all your work - no fence is ever the same. You take a lot more pride in your work. You try not to cut any corners because everyone sees it, and it's all being judged, so you've got to do the tidiest job possible.

Their dedication paid off as Tom and Lachie placed an impressive 5th overall in the Goldpine National Fencing Final. Their teamwork and attention to detail was evident in the quality of their work, earning them recognition among the top competitors from across the country. Congratulations to Tom and Lachie for their achievement and for representing their school, region and TeenAg with pride!
