Otago/Southland has been named the country’s best NZ Young Farmers region.

The region’s members cheered excitedly when the award was announced in Invercargill.

“We are ecstatic,” said chairman Allen Gregory.

Otago/Southland beat six other NZ Young Farmers regions to take out the coveted title.

“We were gutted after being pipped at the post last year, so we’re stoked to have won,” said Allen.

The Otago/Southland region has almost 600 NZ Young Farmers and TeenAg members.

Territory manager Leanne Woodhead, who’s on maternity leave, was praised for her tireless work in the region.

“We probably wouldn’t have won this award without Leanne. She has done so much for our region,” said Allen.

“Members are our main focus in Otago/Southland. That’s what NZ Young Farmers is about for us.”

The region has 14 NZ Young Farmers clubs.

“Our clubs are welcoming and well connected which ensures lots of interclub activities,” he said.

The region has a popular annual weekend away.

Last October’s trip was to Te Anau and included a visit to a high country sheep and beef farm at Walter Peak.

“It was a fantastic get together of more than 60 members from across the region,” he said.

The Otago/Southland FMG Young Farmer of the Year Regional Final at the Winton Hall in April attracted more than 300 people.

“The hall was packed. It was fully sold out. Nightcaps Young Farmers did a superb job organising that event,” said Allen.

Members are now driving many of the region’s events.

“That’s the biggest difference for me. We have active members who get stuck in which is awesome for succession and creates a great vibe,” he said.
