If you’re a young New Zealander with a passion for the Food & Fibre industry and want to try your hand at Governance, then look no further than New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF). An organisation full of opportunities for those under the age of 31, the chance to try your hand at governance, is ripe for the picking.

At the heart of NZYF’s strategy is people - more so ‘leaders’. They want to develop and nurture leaders of the future. For recently elected Board Members James (Jimmy) Robertson and Samantha (Sammy) Bills, this is exactly what NZYF is doing for them. When asked their thoughts on this strategy they had this to say:

“It’s a massive opportunity those under 31 are offered - to step into those [governance] sort of roles and work with the management team, plus a number of independent directors who are there to help develop those more junior around the board. Those opportunities are few and far between in our industry,” Jimmy says.

For Sammy she sees huge importance in developing and nurturing leaders for the organisation.

“When it comes to governance you don’t need to have experience, yes it's beneficial, but NZYF is there to help grow governors. However, you should know the difference between governance and operations.

“I think it’s really important that being part of this organisation at the top leadership level, you exemplify that [strategy] but you also learn, develop and grow from the experience you’re gaining”.
