Alex Tomkins

HORTICULTURE
Graduating from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agri Commerce, Alex works at Trevelyan’s Pack & Cool in the role of Inventory & Shipping Coordinator. Located in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, Trevelyan’s is the largest single-site kiwifruit and avocado packhouse in New Zealand. 

Despite not coming from an agriculture or horticulture background, Alex became interested in the primary industries while living in Asia during her childhood and seeing New Zealand agri-food products in market. Alex is motivated to play a role in producing healthy and high-quality produce and to get this to export markets. 

At Massey University Alex held the leadership role of Horticulture Society President. Passionate about building capability within food and fibre, particularly encouraging those from urban backgrounds into the sector, she has volunteered at various events to attract high school students into the primary industries. 

While at university Alex was selected for the inaugural International Horticulture Immersion Programme (IHIP) study trip to Europe and Korea in 2019, a Prime Ministers Scholarship for Asia (PMSA) for an AgriBusiness tour in Thailand, and she also co-led the Aotearoa Horticulture Immersion Programme (AHIP) in 2020.  

Alex seeks to be a young voice for the horticulture sector, she relishes the opportunity to be part of the pan sector collaboration through the Food & Fibre Youth Network Council. 

"We're all role models, everyone who's involved in the sector has the opportunity to inspire others towards the sector and be a role model. Farmers are a bloody awesome group of people."
