George Dodson

REPRESENTING THE Tasman REGION
Age: 22
Occupation: Dairy farmer
Club: Darfield Young Farmers

Before daylight breaks over the Canterbury Plains, 22-year-old George Dodson is already at the milking sheds, taking in the views of the Southern Alps and the Port Hills. Now a 2IC on a 430-cow dairy farm between Darfield and Dunsandel, George began managing a farm in Southland at just 20. Returning to a 2IC role has given him a fresh perspective and time to focus on other initiatives.

Preparing for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final, George is excited for the fast-paced competition. He thrives under pressure and aims to leverage his practical farming experience and knowledge, inspired by his father's hard work. Looking to the future, George is passionate about improving New Zealand's farmland for the next generation and debunking myths about farmers' environmental care.

Watch: Get to know George

I’ll be trying to dig deep, drawing on my experiences at work but also pulling from the learnings my old man taught me growing up. As a kid, I spent a lot of time on the farm and saw how hard my dad worked – he really has been my biggest inspiration heading into this competition.”

"We're all role models, everyone who's involved in the sector has the opportunity to inspire others towards the sector and be a role model. Farmers are a bloody awesome group of people."

Vote for Tasman in the FMG Region-Off

Tasman boasts diversity - there's dairy and sheep all around, and further north there are vineyards and fruit orchards. It’s an amazing piece of the country to be in.

When you vote for Tasman, you are voting to support Rural Support Trust and the Tasman team.
