Ruth Hone’s leadership skills and outstanding achievements in the dairy industry have landed her the top honour of New Zealand’s Model Farmer for the 2014 International Year of Family Farming.
The New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year will accept the award in Bangkok this October at the Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations celebration for World Food Day. The award will be presented by H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand.
This year’s World Food Day theme is Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth and Ruth earned the award based on her leadership, work and achievements in the industry.
Ruth, 24, was born in England and raised on her family’s dairy farm near Rotorua and later went on to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science in Agriculture.
In 2011 Ruth moved to the Hawke’s Bay and eventually landed a position of dairy farm assistant at the Davison Family Partnership. Ruth aspires to move up to share milking for her family trust, the Oxenford Trust.
She is extremely passionate about the dairy industry and enjoys seeing her peers grow and develop professionally.
Ruth has also held a number of leadership positions within New Zealand Young Farmers from club secretary and treasurer to regional vice-chair and she is now the Tihoi Western Bays Club Chair.
In her spare time, she also participates in the Taupo Harrier Running Club, Taupo Hunt Club and Equestrian Sports New Zealand.
